Aussie Open Preview

Posted on January 07 2019

There’s just one week to go until the tennis season kick into gear with the Australian Open. The players are back in action after their short Christmas recess and the competition will be as tense as ever for the major prizes.

Novak Djokovic will be the firm favorite to claim the trophy in Melbourne, following on from his victories in the US Open and Wimbledon. There will be plenty of players looking to knock the Serb off his throne though and the usual suspects, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal will be there or thereabouts.

Federer will be chasing his 7th Australian Open while Novak Djokovic could also be set to win his 7th title, and Rafal Nadal his 2nd. Asides from these three, there are not too many players who jump out as potential winners.

One who could perhaps upset the old guard is Alexander Zverev, who won the ATP Tour Finals by beating Djokovic back in November. Zverev does not have a particularly good record at Grand Slam events however, and an appearance in the final would represent huge progress for him, let alone winning the title.

Outside of those four, Maric Cilic will be looking to go one step further than his finals appearance last year, and Dominic Thiem, finalist in last year’s French Open will be hoping that 2019 is the year he pushes on to the next level.
