Can Serena Williams win the French Open just six months after giving birth? While her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou admits that she “came back too early” as she lost early on in both Indian Wells and Miami, decades of history suggest she could well add to her Grand Slam tally.

Although Serena has withdrawn from tournaments in Madrid and Rome, leading some to question whether she will participate at Roland Garros, it is likely that she has been putting in the hard yards on the practice court to put her in with a shot of winning her 24th Grand Slam singles title.

Whilst 24 Grand Slam titles speaks for itself and make her an absolute Goliath of the game, she has only won three French Open titles. This means that the French may be the trickiest of Grand Slams for Serena to make her comeback, but Serena is likely to be super motivated to prove she can still be a force as a new mother.

Serena is now 36 years old, but her continued success, well into her thirties suggests that she still has the physicality to compete at the top, and her mental ability to turn up at every Grand Slam puts her head and shoulders above many of her counterparts. Experience and a knack for winning can go along way, and despite Serena’s lack of match practice, it wouldn’t be surprising to see her pushing on deep into the tournament.

Serena’s performance at the French Open will prove to be an interesting side-story in what will be an exciting tournament.
